What a year 2016 was for the Toronto rapper. His album VIEWS was one of the best-selling albums of the year and he was the king of Spotify for the second year in a row; his song ‘One Dance’ became the first song to ever reach a billion streams on Spotify.

Romantically, he was linked to Rihanna (once again) and more recently he’s been spotted dancing and kissing Jennifer Lopez.

In October, he announced that a new music project titled, More Life would be coming soon and we can’t wait to hear it!

On a musical front, 2016 wasn’t a huge year for Taylor Swift (that was more 2015 when she went on her worldwide 1989 World Tour), but there were a few things that happened.

It was revealed that she co-wrote Calvin Harris and Rihanna’s track ‘This Is What You Came For’; in November she performed the track at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.

Her and Calvin Harris got together and subsequently broke up in 2016, leaving many fans to expect her to address the breakup in new music in 2017.

In my opinion, I think it’s more likely Taylor addresses that Kanye West drama that blew up this year.

At the end of 2015, Ed Sheeran revealed that he was taking some time for himself in 2016, and he did just that as he was virtually silent.

It has been three since Justin Timberlake released his last album, The 20/20 Experience, however that doesn’t mean he wasn’t busy in 2016. He released the lead single from the animated movie Trolls, ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’.

According to RCA Records Executive Vice President/GM Joe Riccitelli, “He’s just really working on it now. When he’s ready, he’s ready. Justin does what he does, when he wants to do it.”

It would also appear as if Justin is re-teaming with producer Timbaland (the two worked together on Justin’s Future Sex Love Sounds album).

Justin could be releasing some country music in 2017 according to the Producer and these Instagram pictures.

Timbaland also said, “We always wanted to do country music – we thought some of our lyrics were country. I’m already posted up in Nashville, so that’s something I want to do. I don’t discriminate between genres. I learn it, I study it, and I love it.”

She spent much of 2016 showing her support for Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and although her efforts didn’t help Hillary get into the White House, 2016 was still good to Katy.

Slowly, I am coming down from the beautiful cloud that was Tuesday night's @UNICEF Snowflake Ball. First and foremost, I am incredibly grateful to have received the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award from my hero @HillaryClinton. This award will be a constant reminder to get out of my bubble and back into the field to shine a light on issues that matter most, especially to illuminate the plight of vulnerable children who are living without basic human needs and rights. This honor is a starting line, not a finish line, for me, and I am excited for where my new ambition and purpose leads me! I was profoundly moved and thoroughly surprised when Hillary showed up to give me this award. I broke down and wept watching her take the stage. The last time I was in NYC was for Election Night. I left covered in a blanket of sadness and despair because for me, and I imagine others, the results triggered a lot of dormant fears and emotions to the surface. I feared that we were not ever going to see the light of justice or fairness. I felt vulnerable, confused and frightened like a child. From the outside it probably looks as though I've always had a "voice." Truth is, I have never had one like I have found in the past year. I have a found a new voice, a more determined voice. I grew up sheltered, suppressed and kept silent for fear of giving the wrong answer. I would reveal my poor education. Or I was just scared. Hillary helped me see that we're all in this together, no matter where we come from, what color we are, or what status and education we have or don't have. Hillary lit a fire inside of me that burns brighter and brighter every day, and that fire will NEVER be put out. Feelings of despair still comes in waves, but now more than ever I am MOTIVATED to fight against social injustice and to promote equality and kindness as best I know how, through my art and influence. I am continually inspired by her strength and how she continues to rise like the Phoenix she is, every time. It's funny, sometimes people who disagree with me just say, "Shut up and sing." Boy, will I do so in a whole new way… next year. Hell hath no fury like a woman REBORN.

Her and boyfriend Orlando Bloom spent a lot of time out publicly, and she released an anthem for the 2016 Summer Olympics, ‘Rise’.

Although the sound or style of Katy’s new music is unknown, we do know that new music from her will drop in 2017 as she revealed on Twitter.

She also hinted at a tour in the new year when clapping back at a rude fan.

The former One Direction member stunned fans in September by announcing that he had signed a solo deal with Capitol Records; he then released his debut solo single, ‘This Town’.

He performed the song at many high profile shows including The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and the American Music Awards.

He and Pickering, Ontario native Shawn Mendes have both publicly stated that they are working on music together for the new year and even covered Shawn’s song ‘Mercy’ together.

Niall revealed that he’s taking his time with his solo album and that it will be heavily influenced by the likes of Fleetwood Mac, and The Eagles.

In 2016, Nicki Minaj would continue her budding romance with rapper Meek Mill and also go on to star in the movie, Barbershop: The Next Cut.

Nicki and Ariana Grande teamed up once again for the sexually explicit single, ‘Side to Side’; the two also performed it at this year’s American Music Awards.

Nicki also dropped a remix to the popular ‘Mannequin Challenge’ song, ‘Black Beatles’ by Rae Sremmurd and Gucci Mane.

We already know that in 2017 she’ll drop collaborations with Madonna and Major Lazer, meaning her new album is bound to be diverse and hot!

HARRY STYLES

Niall and Zayn aren’t the only former One Direction members with solo deals.

In 2016, Harry Styles signed a solo deal with Columbia Records and according to singer Robbie Williams, Harry could be working with Bruno Mars and super producer Max Martin!

He said, “Last year I tried to work with Bruno Mars – didn’t hear anything back. Tried to work with Max Martin – didn’t hear anything back. They literally didn’t return my calls. Then I met Harry Styles in an airport. ‘Oh, you’re writing, Harry? Great, who with?’ He goes: ‘Well, I just spent a week with Bruno Mars, and I’m about to spend a week with Max Martin’.”

Harry has also been busy getting his acting on as he stars in the upcoming movie, Dunkirk. Check out the trailer for that below.

MAJOR LAZER

I have to admit, I am probably most excited to hear what these guys do next in 2017.

This past year, they teased that their upcoming album Music Is The Weapon would have even bigger features than their last album Peace Is The Mission. They’ve already released ‘Cold Water’ their collaboration with Justin Bieber and MØ.

They also revealed that they have a new single with Nicki Minaj and PartyNextDoor that will drop on January 6th.

His band, Maroon 5, haven’t released a new album since 2014’s V, but they did release a catchy single, ‘Don’t Wanna Know’ featuring rapper Kendrick Lamar.

The band will be on tour in 2017 and hit cities like Montreal, Cleveland and New York.

CALVIN HARRIS

2016 was probably way more about his personal life than his music for Calvin Harris (see breakup with Taylor Swift HERE), something I’m sure he’d like to change in 2017.

He released the hugely successful single, ‘This Is What You Came For’ featuring Rihanna.

He also released ‘My Way’.

Expect Calvin to take his time with rolling out new music, as he revealed in a September interview,

“This [‘My Way’] is probably the last thing I’ll put out this year. I did something with Big Sean for him, which he said might be out this year — which I really hope it is, because I love that. Apart from that, that’s it. One song at a time. That’s my new mantra. Try to make each song as good as it can possibly be. I’m not trying to do an album. I’m just trying to do good music.”

It’s been relatively quiet on the music front for Miley Cyrus since her 2013 album, Bangerz.

In 2016, she appeared as a judge on NBC’s The Voice and released a free album titled, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz.

In fact, in 2016, we heard more from Miley’s little sister Noah who released her own single, ‘Make Me (Cry’).

Just a few days ago she released an acoustic performance of another song, ‘Almost Famous’.

You’re not likely to ever hear much from the music duo in terms of words because they let their music speak for themselves, as they did in 2016.

They appeared on two tracks off The Weeknd’s Starboy album, the title track, ‘Starboy’ and my own personal favourite song off the album, ‘I Feel It Coming’.

Rumours have persisted for a months now that they will also go on tour at some point in 2017.

It’s been three years since Lorde released her incredible debut album ‘Pure Heroine.’ Since then, we’ve received very little information on what comes next for the young star.

On November 7th, she provided an update on her life and just when we could expect new music from her.
