She was born and raised in Edmonton but now calls Toronto home and is Universal Music Canada’s latest local signing, her name is Kapri and let me tell you, she is SO incredibly talented.

Before we dive into her music, it is important to look into her past and see where her musical influences stem from.

In an interview with Canadian Beats, Kapri was asked where it all began for her musically. She said, “My love for music and performing began at a very early age. After school, the school bus would drop me off downtown to my mom’s dance studio, where I’d watch her and the dancers carry out their rehearsals. I was constantly surrounded by creatives so singing, dancing and creating was a part of my every day.”

She was raised by her mother, who is from Trinidad and Tobago, and she learned different African and Soca rhythms and developed a real talent for that style of music; her mother actually opened Alberta’s Afro-Caribbean dance studio.

She also cites Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Chaka Khan as musical influences, but the real interesting part is that her debut single, ‘Deeper’ (which we’ll discuss later) doesn’t really have the sound of her mother’s Afro-Caribbean roots, nor the soul of any of the aforementioned female icons.

But, that’s what makes Kapri so talented is her musical diversity.

On the dance-inspired ‘Deeper’, Kapri throws it back to the 90s (you would have totally heard this on Electric Circus back in the day)

When asked to describe her sound she said, I want to create music that moves you and makes you want to move. The kind of tracks that let you escape to a safe space where you can just be yourself.”

She added, “It’s not about hopping on the 90s-is-back train but rather bringing emotion back to the dance floor where it belongs!”

Her young career is off to a great start as ‘Deeper’ reached #1 on the Canadian Spotify Viral Chart and she says right now she is planning on releasing more singles and collaborating with more artists in 2018. Then, hopefully thereafter, we’ll get a full length album.

‘Deeper’ is a great record that you’ll definitely have on repeat. Check out the music video and stream the song below!
