While she was born and raised in Edmonton, this month’s One to Watch artist, Kapri is heavily influenced by Afro-Caribbean culture. You see, her mother is from Trinidad & Tobago and was responsible for Alberta’s first ever Afro-Caribbean dance studio.

You can credit her mom for helping to shape her music style, “Most definitely! The West Indian culture has such a rich influence in many aspects of my life and especially music. I’ve naturally tried to adopt into my music the Afro and Caribbean rhythms I was raised listening to in and out of dance class.”

In an interview with Universal Music Canada, she explained how her background influences her music, “Since the spirit of the Caribbean culture is so vibrant and festive, I love to play around with upbeat and bright sounds. Production wise, my culture is definitely reflected in the tempos and the rhythms that I choose.”

Although she grew up in Edmonton, she now calls Toronto, one of Canada’s most diverse cities, her new home, “Toronto is very special to me! Not only is this city a perfect mix of business and pleasure but I feel right at home and in touch with my Caribbean roots here because of Toronto’s multiculturalism.”

She even filmed ‘Deeper’ in the 6ix, “I chose my own looks and found a neighbourhood in Downtown Toronto that 100 percent represents who I am—a Carib-Canadian who’s linked to so many amazing scenes.”
