Taber AB

New Bylaw in Taber, AB bans swearing and restricts public assembly. Wah!

This is a little crazy. A sweeping new bylaw in a smaller southern Alberta town called Taber has outlawed swear words in public, puts a nightly curfew on kids and teenagers and has given some powers to local law enforcement to break up public assemblies of more than three people.

The new “Community Standards Bylaw” has been called unconstitutional by a few authorities on the subject and isn’t predicted to hold up.

According to Metro news the wording of the new bylaw it set up in such a way that even whispers a swear word could land you a $150 fine.

Some other community events like bake sales, garage sales, and charity car washes could actually fall under some of the bylaws provisions.

The bylaw was drafted by the town’s police service along with guidance from their council. Metro news has more on the subject.
