Demi Lovato’s mom, Dianna De La Garza recently spoke to Maria Menounos on her Sirius XM show where she gave an update on her daughter.  Back in July, Demi was rushed to the hospital after an apparent drug overdose and according to family, she’s in a good place right now.  Dianna says, “She has 90 days.  I couldn’t be more thankful or more proud of her because addiction being a disease, it’s work.  It’s very hard.  It’s not easy, and there are no shortcuts.”

During the interview, Demi’s mom admitted that to this day, she doesn’t know what led Demi to her relapse.  Dianna explains, “I knew that she wasn’t sober.  I didn’t know what she was doing because she doesn’t live with me and she’s 26.”  She continues, “It can be any number of reasons.  We lost five close members of our family in one year while I was writing the book, my grandfather, my grandmother, two uncles.  We lost five people just in a span of a few months.  My grandmother and my grandfather were older and they were in a nursing home, but my uncles, that was kind of a shock.  And then I lost a grandmother on my father’s side and so even through all of that, losing all of those people, she didn’t relapse.  So, it’s hard to say.  You couldn’t say because we lost five people in our family that cased a relapse.”

Dianna also confessed that she believes Demi ‘may have ended up around the wrong people.’ “I also think that when you’re young and sometimes you think, maybe I can go do this and it won’t affect me, but with an addiction you just can’t do that.  It’s a slippery slope.”  What broke my heart was listening to Dianna about the time she found out about Demi’s overdose, “The one text message that clued me in on what was going on said, ‘I just saw on TMZ and I’m so sorry.’  Before I could get to TMZ, I got the phone call from her assistant and she said, ‘We’re at the hospital.’  So then I knew, OK, she’s not gone.  She’s here.  And I said, ‘What’s going on?’ And the words that I heard are just a nightmare for any parent: ‘Demi overdosed.'”

In June, a month before her overdose, Demi released a song called ‘Sober’ which indicated that at one point in time, she slipped back into old habits.  Dianna tells Maria that’s how she knew Demi wasn’t clean – it was all because of the song.
